About This Website
My name is Jake and I love huckleberries. I built this site a few years ago because I wanted to share some of my favorite huckleberry recipes with the rest of the world. If you have never eaten huckleberries you don't know what you are missing. It's worth planning a trip to Idaho or Wyoming just to find out why people are so crazy about huckleberries.
The world has changed since I wrote my first articles about huckleberries. Global warming may threaten them. We don't know how much longer we'll be able to enjoy these delicious berries. What is happening is that global warming makes rainy areas rain more and dry areas rain less. Some of the places where huckleberries grow are in the rain shadow of the northern Rocky Mountains and the berries are very susceptible to drought conditions.
The good news is that huckleberries will survive in places like Washington and Oregon but future generations may have fewer huckleberries to share with the wild animals that depend on them. I hope that some day scientists will figure out how to grow huckleberries commercially so that we can leave the wild animals in peace to enjoy their berries.
Some people really love to pick huckleberries and maybe the thing we should look for is a way to grow huckleberries away from national forests, close to where families that grew up picking the berries can continue to enjoy them.
To that end, I dedicate this site to the hope that we'll find ways for future generations of people AND animals to continue reaping a wonderful huckleberry harvest every year in spite of how the climate changes.
I hope you enjoy this site.
