Information and Recipes about Huckleberries

Huckleberries grow wild in the northwestern United States, especially in Idaho and Montana but also in Washington and Oregon. Huckleberries are also harvested in western Canada and southern Alaska. And I have heard of huckleberries in Iowa and Wyoming, too. There are many species of wild huckleberries but the kind that are harvested for food in the northwest are the Mountain Huckleberries (Vaccinium membranaceum). I have read they may grow as far east as the Great Lakes.

ome people sell huckleberries to companies that make huckleberry products. They go to the national parks and get permits to pick huckleberries. There are two kinds of permits: personal use and commercial huckleberry harvesting permits. I don't know what the difference is except that commercial permits allow you to pick more huckleberries. Many of the state parks don't allow commercial harvesting of huckleberries.

Huckleberries are so popular in the northwest that whole towns have festivals around them every year. The local families share their home-baked goods and they have contestes. You'll also find huckleberries in ice creams, sodas, and candies sold across the region. But it's really hard to get huckleberries and huckleberry products outside the northwestern United States and western Canada. Most of us have to buy products on the Internet if we want to enjoy huckleberry dishes.
